Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.
"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
