Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these drugs must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication describe a intense return of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly starving," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
